Dr. Mahendra Sethi

Mahendra Sethi is an Alexander von Humboldt Research Fellow. His research focuses on Systems Analysis of Clean Energy Technologies in Global Megacities with the aim of mainstreaming climate mitigation policies in emerging economies. He is also a Visiting Researcher at the Mercator Research Institute of Global Commons & Climate Change (MCC). 

Mahendra has a decade of research, practical and academic experience in the urban-environment field. During 2012-18, he was a faculty at the National Institute of Urban Affairs where he edited the research journal Urban India and contributed to the project Climate Change Impacts, Vulnerability and Adaptation in Urban Settlements under UNFCCC reporting (National Communications III). He has been part of the Asia Pacific Network on Global Climate Change (APN) supported research group on Clean Energy Development at Asian Megacities, Kyoto University.

Born in India and obtained primary education in London, UK, Mahendra returned to New Delhi and pursued a Bachelor of Architecture (1998-2003). He practiced architecture and went on to attain a Masters in Environmental Planning from the School of Planning and Architecture (2007). He served in the development sector (2007-12) where he was involved in planning consultancy, appraisals and formulation of urban environmental plans for national governments, statuary bodies, private sector and international/multilateral funding organizations, including the World Bank and WWF.

As a doctoral fellow, Mahendra contributed to the Sustainable Urban Futures Program at the United Nations University - Institute for the Advanced Study of Sustainability (UNU-IAS), Tokyo, where his research explored the role of sustainability at the interface of global environmental change and local urban governance, with a focus on energy and emissions in developing countries. Mahendra has conducted special talks, lectures with public representatives, administrators, development experts at the Institute for Global Environmental Strategies Japan, International Center for Environment Audit and Sustainable Development and Indian Institute of Public Administration. He has lectured in postgraduate courses, supervised dissertation, planning studios and thesis in urban studies, environment, climate change at Meiji Gakuin University, Sophia University, Jamia Millia University, TERI University, School of Planning & Architecture and Dr APJ Abdul Kalam Technical University.

Mahendra has been a convenor, jury member in international meets and academic defenses, and a referee for scientific journals like Climate Change, EEMJ & JGRP. In addition to inquiries of environment and sustainability in the developing context, he has keen interest in equitable green growth, environmental resources, low-carbon societies and energy planning, sustainable transport, optimization models and green habitat.  

Mahendra is a recipient of UNU-IAS PhD Fellowship 2013-14, Ministry of Human Resource Development (GATE) Scholarship 2005-07 and was offered the Liverpool University Scholarship 2005. His current research at TU Berlin is generously supported by the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation.
